Is this for real?

Are you like me going through your 30's or 40's (we won't get specific here) trying to figure out this life/career thing?

In my profession I get calls daily from individuals who are stuck between a rock and a hard place in their careers. They call me for advice and ask me to find them their 'dream job'. When I ask them what that 'dream job' is they all sound the same. They want a 'voice' in their new role, they want to be able to make decisions and have room to grow, perhaps even manage a team, travel the world... and more importantly to have 'peace' in what they do day in and day out which takes them away from their families.

Maybe it is the executive talent I work with, but these individuals are all highly educated, mostly married and seeking fulfilment. I read a saying (I can't remember where) a few months ago which has stuck in my head, it said: "Isn't it ironic that those who sit at a desk all day normally earn more than those who stand all day". Yet, those who stand all day or whose who do manual labour are happier in their workplace, healthier and have a better work/life balance.

What is it that we are all striving towards? I often tell these individuals that if I get you a better job, more money and the responsibility you crave, you will have less time and more stress. Think carefully about what you want for your future and then make calculated decisions to reach that goal.
